In 2001 Laser Spectacles was contacted by National Geographics photographer Joe McNally to stage some photos with lasers for an article he was working on called “The Power of Light.”

Joe followed Tim Walsh and Laser Spectacles for a week in Feb. 2001, and shot 65 rolls of film! One of his favorites was published on the National Geographic web site, a special portrait of Tim Walsh at work. Click here to see it on the National Geographic site with descriptions of how the photo was taken.

Dancers in Fiber Optic

Dancers wrapped in laser light

One of the special projects that Joe McNally and Tim Walsh pursued was to wrap ballet dancers in 200 feet of side-glow, laser illuminated Lumenyte optical fiber. See the results on the National Geographic site here.

Joe also arranged for a posse of Houston Ballet dancers to come meet us in Austin in a rave warehouse set up by Tim with his laser show – Joe arranged the dancers in between Tim’s laser show to great effect. While this shoot was not used on the web site, some of the pictures can be seen in this special video National Geographic created for the Power of Light: “Power of Light Video”
