For those wishing to project full color stereoscopic 3D, Laser Animation has as an option the Trimagic 3D laser projector. This projector is unusual in that it only uses one pair of XY scanners. This is accomplished by a special arrangement inside the Trimagic that switches the polarity every other frame under DSP control, so that the correct image reaches the correct eye. While this may seem at first to increase the "flicker rate," in actual practice this rate is smoothed out by the alternating of the eyes. This can be best described as one eye is still holding the afterimage while the other eye is being exposed to its new image. Upon being combined in the brain, the extra flicker is not noticed.
The Trimagic is designed to be fed by a laser fiber input, with the colors already modulated by PCAOM. It is a compact unit, about 15" X 12" X 6", with all electronics and optics enclosed in an attractive case, and the laser images exiting through an optical window. Signal connection is by the standard DSP 9-pin D connector, and the unit will run on 110V.
The Trimagic does require a special silver screen to preserve the polarity of the reflected images. We have found that it works well with a variety of silver surfaces, so it does not necessarily need to be expensive.
In actual use, the Trimagic projector is simple. Simply add one command at the beginning of the fil script, and it will be projected in 3D. You have control over the placement of the "virtual screen," and also how far the viewer's eyes are spaced apart. These are important parameters, as they allow the 3D effect to be matched to the size of any room or screen that the projection takes place in.
The effect is truly wonderful and convincing; combined with the Lasergraph DSP's advanced hidden line capabilities, audiences will experience a very realistic 3D effect. This is truly the "laser show of the future!"
